Overview
Scottish deerhounds are dignified, undemanding dogs that do well in obedience classes, get along with everyone, and love the attention of children, especially if socialized with them at an early age. While they are comfortable with animals, they may run after cats if not socialized with them early. They are not protective of their territory but take their time getting to know strangers. Although they can adjust to city life, they are better off in suburban and rural settings where they have room to exercise and stretch their long, graceful legs.
Appearance
The deerhound's coat is harsh, wiry, and shaggy. Its color is gray, dark blue-gray, brindle, yellow, sandy red, or red fawn.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
Scottish deerhounds need to be brushed and combed once a week. They need several long walks daily and the opportunity to run and romp in a secured area at least once a week.
Origins
Scottish deerhounds were owned only by nobility in Scotland during the Middle Ages and were used to course deer. The collapse of the clan system in the mid-18th century and the introduction of guns for hunting decreased the popularity of the deerhound.
Special Alerts
Breed-related health concerns: bloat, osteochondritis dissecans.
